More to consider when studying Public Relations

Keeping record and being updated with current events

I reckon the term ‘relations’ is the essence of the public, look at it this way: would the public function at all without relating? Certainly not. Public relations is really all about how the public relates in and around itself. So if its events that occur within the public that cause need for communication amongst publics, then wouldn’t it be relevant or safe to point out that public relations as a function is then liable for managing the relationships between the two? Makes sense?
Keep Updated with Current Events

Right, again public relations people are known to be responsible for also managing and maintaining a good relationship the public, organisations, stakeholders, consumers and even the media. They need to continuously keep updated with current events. I’m sure I don’t speak for myself in this instance, I find it more interesting and entertaining to read about celebrity gossip but iv realised that it’s also important to know about other issues or occurrences in and out of your country. Trust me, once you get used to it and you may even start enjoying it. Almost like you can’t go without.

Digital literacy

Well, as you may know. Technology has evolved over the years and keeps advancing by the day. Let’s just say knowing your way around the computer and phone may be a good start but fairly not enough. For those of us who are not thee fanatics of gadgets, this value could just as well take some getting used to. But isn’t there always hope in the world? Of course. Like monitoring news and current events; this too can be learned and eventually enjoyed.

Digital literacy in public relations is important predominantly because in order to be active in the online community as well as participating in the social media you would need to familiarise yourself with establishments that allow you to do so. If we need to be honest though, without excluding our vintage pen and paper lovers, this is much better!!

Active in Social Media

This really has to be where all the fun is at. Most people are already socially involved, whether it be on or offline. So the same principles I held in my social life, isn’t or wasn’t any different online. Well to an extent. When you’re in public relations you’re almost obliged to be involved in social networking. It also depends on the type of organisation you’re employed under.

Most people are on social networking sites; and these people form a large number or group of the public. If publics are online, then that’s where PR needs to be, online.

Clear Image

I like to say that; the same way you would keep your name out of dirt, and my reputation in tact as an individual , the same should apply in maintaining a managing a good image for yourself as a public relations person. What happens is that you carry your name with you and if people’s knowledge of you isn’t altogether that great; you can’t really expect to stand in representation of any brand or organisation. It takes a lot of patience, time and well...some money to rebuild a dented image and its credibility.
